Westminster system is bust, says Stewart

Westminster’s political upheaval underlines what the Yorkshire Party has been saying for years: the two-party system is bust, says Yorkshire Party Leader Stewart Arnold in his latest video diary.

As the two main parties moved to the extreme, the formation of an Independent Group in the Commons was shake-up in the system that had seen a growing sense of disengagement with the political process.

In his analysis of the defection from Labour of eight of its MPs and from the Conservatives of three of theirs, Stewart says: “Perhaps the outcome will be a politics that is much more responsive to 21st century Great Britain.

“A politics, not least, I hope, that takes into account the fact that decentralisation, devolution and pushing powers down to the communities is absolutely what people want in order to feel re-engaged with the political system.”
