Shine light on our MPs in devolution campaign

Yorkshire Party members and One Yorkshire supporters are being urged to join a new campaign to push the devolution debate forward.

Party Treasurer John Hall has launched an initiative to force the county’s politicians to address the issue in answer to their constituents.

John is asking members and supporters to write to MPs and councillors to galvanise those in the corridors of power.

“The reason I did this is because most of our Yorkshire MPs do not speak up for Yorkshire. Tory MPs in particular are not speaking out. Councillors have not been asked. To really benefit we need to engage friends and family to support us; more so the public.

“This initiative could show the Yorkshire public we are trying hard on their behalf, not just sitting back.”

He says campaign supporters can follow-up their letters to politicians by writing to their local newspapers explaining the move.

John has set up a user-friendly system for supporters to contact their local politicians and has drafted some suggested comments – see below – as a basis for questioning local representatives.

He advises: “Use the ‘write to them’ link below, select your local MP or councillor  by entering your postcode and copy and paste the following letter into the “Write Your Message” box: https://www.writetothem.com/

John said: “The Government is stalling over Yorkshire;s desire for a ‘One Yorkshire’ administration. Our political representatives in Yorkshire should be taken to task and we would be obliged if all members contacted their MPs, district and county councillors.

“We suggest you tweet and post the response you receive. This will attract further comment of either encouragement or criticism, engaging the wider public. MPs who do not reply should be encouraged to do so on social media and ‘letters to the editor’ in the local newspaper.

“It’s important that all MPs are contacted therefore would members please contact their friends and contacts in Yorkshire to promote this campaign vigorously.

“Please let me know when you have contacted your MP by making a comment on the campaign page so I can monitor the progress and coverage. Thank you for your support.”

John plans to use a similar system to hold local politicians to account on various issues of interest to the Yorkshire Party and its members

SUGGESTED LETTER TO MP

I believe Yorkshire is being ignored by the current government as local people reach out to secure a better future for all of the county; that is all of Yorkshire, not just the interest of a few major cities such as Leeds and Sheffield. Eighteen of the 20 Yorkshire councils support the One Yorkshire initiative, as do numerous MPs, business leaders, trade unions, and notable figures such as Lord Heseltine.
As your constituent, perhaps you would let me know the following:
Do you support a ‘One Yorkshire’ devolved administration with similar powers to those in Scotland?
If so, have you made it clear to your party and to your Yorkshire constituents?
Have you attended the meetings in Parliament on devolution for Yorkshire?
If you are not in support of this initiative, would you let me know why you do not think it is the right way forward for Yorkshire?
