Media Brief
The Yorkshire Party was set up to campaign on the idea of greater devolution for Yorkshire and its five million people.
Founded in 2014, the Party is pro-devolution and pledges to judge issues on how they will affect Yorkshire, its people, economy and environment.
The Party wants Yorkshire to have decision-making powers through a devolved assembly within the UK; to build a more democratic, engaged and accountable society and to rebalance the economy away from the South East, creating a thriving Yorkshire that works for all the people who have chosen to work, study or live here.
The Party is represented on one principal local authority in Yorkshire having councillors on East Riding Council – with a host of parish and town councillors across the county.
2017
The Yorkshire Party is the sixth most voted for party in all of England in the snap 2017 General Election.
2018
The Yorkshire Party contests the only regional election held in Yorkshire, the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Election. We secure just shy of 10% of the vote regionally, beating the Green Party. In every South Yorkshire Borough except Sheffield, we outpoll the Liberal Democrats.
2019 – May
The Yorkshire Party scores a number of landslide victories in the 2019 local elections, taking seats from both the Conservatives and Labour. We form the second-largest opposition group on Selby District Council, and have elected representatives on the two top-tier authorities in Yorkshire – North Yorkshire County Council and East Riding County Council.
2019 – June
The Yorkshire Party contests the 2019 EU elections in the Yorkshire and Humber constituency. We score over 50,000 votes. We are the only non-Parliamentary Party to outpoll ChangeUK in any region of the UK. We score over twice as many votes as the Women’s Equality Party, despite standing in a smaller constituency. We poll roughly as many votes as the Ulster Unionist Party.
2019 – December
A busy year is capped off with The Yorkshire Party retaining their title as the sixth most voted for party in England. With an increase to just under 30,000 votes, or 1.03% of Yorkshire’s vote.
2021
Contesting the inaugural West Yorkshire Mayoral election The Yorkshire Party finishes third place, beating the Greens, Liberal Democrats and Reform UK, with 58,851 first preference votes. In Doncaster we retain our deposit for the second time in a row in the Doncaster Mayoral election, increasing our vote from 5.0% to 6.4%.
2022 - May
Following on from success the previous year, Simon Biltcliffe contested the South Yorkshire Mayoral election. Repeating the West Yorkshire result we finished third, beating the Greens and the Liberal Democrats with 13.4%, or nearly 35,000 first preference votes. In the entire Barnsley Borough, we made history by becoming the first non-parliamentary party to finish second across an entire council area, with 23.1%.
2022 - June
David Herdson achieves the party's best ever result at a Parliamentary by-election with 4.3% of the vote at the Wakefield by-election.
2022 - July
Simon Biltcliffe and Bob Buxton are elected as joint leaders of the party.
