Yorkshire Party Deputy Leader Chris Whitwood claimed second place in the Doncaster Town Ward by-election.

While Labour’s Tosh McDonald took the council seat with 1,084 votes, Chris was a creditable runner-up with 570 votes, almost twice as many as the third-placed Green candidate.

Voter turn-out was a disappointing 18% in the ward of 12,883 electors.

Chris was grateful for all the support he received from voters and Party members.

“We’ve shown that there is a positive alternative to Doncaster Labour. Thank you to everyone who voted and helped out in the campaign.

“Together we can change our town for the better!” he said

Party Leader Stewart Arnold said: “We achieved one of our best results in the Party’s short history in the local council by-election in Doncaster on Thursday.

“Chris got 25% of the vote in Town Ward finishing in a strong second place, losing out only narrowly to the Labour winner.

“This is a remarkable result considering we hadn’t stood in the seat at all until May last year. Many thanks to all those who supported the campaign in Doncaster.”
