Keep Yorkshire's courts open

The Government has announced plans to close courts across Yorkshire. It says they're 'surplus to requirements'. We disagree. When considered alongside cuts to legal aid the closure of local Courts will restrict people’s access to justice, particularly for people without the means to travel easily.

The courts in Yorkshire earmarked for closure are:

  • Halifax County Court
  • Halifax Magistrates Court
  • Halifax Family Court
  • Wakefield Magistrates Court
  • Rotherham County Court
  • Rotherham Magistrates Court
  • Rotherham Family Court

We're calling on the Government to withdraw these plans to close courts across Yorkshire, and for the Government to devolve power to make decisions like this to Yorkshire. Choices about Yorkshire's public services should be made in Yorkshire, rather than by unaccountable civil servants in London.

Please sign our petition calling on the Government to think again, and not cut off the most vulnerable in society from the justice they deserve.

With local courts, decisions which matter to local people can be made at a local level which in turn makes the most sense. Two people from Wakefield city shouldn’t have to go to Leeds for example to have their case heard

It will be disastrous if the Halifax Courts close. I believe in Local justice for local people. I think this is another knee jerk reaction and although might save some money in the immediate this will be a great loss to the community.

    Yes

Courts and all other public bodies should be kept local for those people who do not drive, so not preventing unfair discrimination against those people (if they have to use taxis at least local bodies will minimise the cost) We are not all expenses paid Politicians & Senior Civil Servants

How can any Govt. so detatched from the electorate as this lot are, even consider dictating policy to an area they have shown to know little about, from 160 miles away? Pure arrogance and intransigence.
