An update from Yorkshire First

Yorkshire First has recently undergone some internal changes. This statement seeks to outline them.

Following founding Yorkshire First in 2014, and being re-elected leader in 2015, Richard Carter has stepped down as party leader. Yorkshire First's Steering Group is extremely grateful for Richard's efforts over the previous two years, and we know Richard intends to remain involved in the party, to help Yorkshire First continue to grow and develop into a real political force.

Our first elected Chair John Boocock has also decided to step down from his position. As with Richard, we are very grateful for all of John's hard work in the previous years, and we look forward to continuing to work with John as a valued Yorkshire First member in the months and years to come.

Following the decisions of Richard and John, Yorkshire First's elected Steering Group met yesterday (Saturday 9 July) to plan a way forward.

The Steering Group unanimously resolved that current Deputy Leader Stewart Arnold be appointed acting Leader until our party conference later this year, where all members will have a chance to contest a leadership election.

The Steering Group unanimously resolved that current Steering Group member Dr Lucy Brown be appointed Chair until the party conference later this year.

Finally, the Steering Group unanimously resolved that current Steering Group member Chris Whitwood be appointed Deputy Leader.

The Steering Group also discussed the importance of capitalising on the current political situation and ensuring that our party moves onto the next level in terms of membership, electoral success and overall influence.

To this effect, we have appointed from the Steering Group a number of individuals to focus on these issues, with further updates on this in the coming days and weeks.

The Steering Group has also resolved to consult with the party membership around a possible party name change, which we will update all paid members on in the coming days.

As a Steering Group we are incredibly excited about the future of our party. We recognise the challenges ahead, but with your help we can build a new, progressive political alternative in Yorkshire. If you vote for us or support us, but haven't yet become a member, please consider joining us today. Together we can make a difference.

A big thank you to Richard & John for all the hard work they have put in. It can’t have been easy! And good luck to Stewart, Lucy & Chris on their new roles!

I look forward to seeing the results of the debate regarding the name change, and personally hope that we adopt the ‘Yorkshire Party’ as our new name.

I like the name Party of Yorkshire but this wasn’t given as an option.

Best wishes to Richard & John for their future endeavours, both were well suited to their roles and played a significant part in the Party being what it is today. Might I suggest that now is a good time to address the Party’s greatest weakness, as I see it. The ‘internal’ operation of the Party needs to be as democratic, as the aspirations it espouses for Yorkshire itself.
